BRANTINGHAM-GREIG COMMUNITY LIBRARY
MARCH 5, 2009 BOARD MEETING

The Board of Trustees of the BGCL met on March 5, 2009, at 10:00AM at the home of Betty Sawyer.  Present were Betty Sawyer, Erma Andre, Audrey Drake, Susie Hammecker, Mary Lee O’Brien, Cathy Rohr, Marian Lowe, and Judy Wilson.  Carolyn Gaylord was absent.

The minutes of the January 15, 2009, meeting were read and a motion to approve was made by Susie Hammecker and seconded by Cathy Rohr.  There is no written Treasurer’s Report this month.  The Newsletter from NCLS is attached to these minutes with the current budget cuts.

Cathy Rohr confirmed the receipt of the checks from the Town of Greig and the County.  She will purchase a CD this month.  One suggestion to raise funds for the library is to establish a “Be a Friend of the Library Program.”  If this program is adopted it will be separate from the Library Board...Should we have a “Change Jar” on the desk at the library?  At the present, Camp Aldersgate is delaying its building plans.

Audrey Drake says that book donations continue to come to the library.  The North Country catalog has arrived.  We will explore erecting a new bookcase at the entrance to the kitchen.  The North Country reads author will speak at Lowville Academy on April 2, 2009.  We are planning an Adirondack week at the library from July 4th to July 11th.  Adirondack and Brantingham books and photos will be displayed.

Marian Lowe will ask the Doney’s for suggested menus for the Library Luncheon.

Mary Lee O’Brien noted that circulation for January was the same as last year’s.  February’s circulation was up.  In 2009, 169 materials were checked out.  In 2008, 147 materials were checked out.

We received thank you notes from Emily, our intern, and Sue Stratton from the Lyons Falls Library.

The book return container will not be a mailbox.  Cathy will continue to look for a deck container.

Susie Hammecker offered an idea for the BCA Dinner.  We will raffle a Golf Basket.  The Basket will contain a round of golf with a cart, golf gadgets, dinner certificates, and Charles Gray’s HISTORY OF THE BRANTINGHAM GOLF COURSE.  The raffle will be promoted in the weeks before the BCA Diner.  Next February Susie wants to promote cross-country skiing under a full moon followed by chili & libations.

Book marks/magnets will be available at the BCA Dinner and through the Directors of the Association.

Saturday hours will begin April 4th and end in December.  The hours will be from 10 AM to 12AM.

A VCR player was donated to the library.  Should we make it available for loan with a deposit by check?

Librarian Betty Sawyer is going to retire this year.  Cathy Rohr will assume her duties.  Mary Lee O’Brien will become the treasurer.

The next meeting will be on May 14, 2009, at 9:30AM at the library.

A motion to adjourn the meeting was made by Audrey Drake and seconded by Mary Lee O’ Brien.

                                                              Respectfully submitted,
                                                                 Judy Wilson

AmeriCu has the best interest at 3.35%.  We expect $1000 from the Town of Greig and $253 from the County.
Mary Lee O’Brien said that the circulation is about average for the winter season.

Marian Lowe purchased Kathleen Bishop’s book for the library.  Ms. Bishop will be the speaker for the library luncheon on July 30, 2009 at the Coachlight.

Audrey Drake has not bought new books because we have received donations of best sellers.  She bought a new DVD, MAMA MIA.  Audrey is waiting for the North Country catalog.

Amy, the representative for NCLS, would like to meet with all the libraries to discuss budget cuts.
Our intern, Emily, worked at the library during her college break.  We will discuss summer internship and summer hours at the March board meeting.

The “Chairity Event” will be held at the entrance to the Country Faire.  We will plan on a book signing by local author, Jeff Wilson, at the book sale.

A get-well card was sent to Mike Huber.

Our book return container needs replacing.  Cathy Rohr will check on the price of patio containers.  Betty will check on old postal boxes.  A motion was made to purchase “something” by Audrey Drake and seconded by Mary Lee O’Brien.

Four people from the Lyons Falls library joined us on January 12, 2009, for a tour and refreshments at the BGCL.  They commented on how well organized our library was and the fact that we kept public records on our shelves.

The Board of Trustees of the BGCL met on November 5, 2008, at 10:05AM at the home of Betty Sawyer. Present were Betty Sawyer, Erma Andre, Audrey Drake, Marian Lowe, Susie Hammecker, Mary Lee O’Brien, Carolyn Gaylord, Cathy Rohr, and Judy Wilson.

The minutes of the September 11, 2008, meeting were read and a motion to approve was made by Carolyn Gaylord and seconded by Susie Hammecker. The Treasurer’s Report is attached to these minutes.

We must be prepared for the possibility of lower County Funding for libraries this year. We need to think about serious fund raising for the library at Aldersgate. We expect we will be called on to contribute to the building fund. There may be a chance for a grant from the Northern NY Foundation. Another fund raising suggestion was a Chair-ity Auction at the Craft Faire. We would advertise in the BCA Newsletter and local papers. Should we research high investment savings account rather than a CD? The treasurer could put $2000 in savings.

The library received $500 from Senator Joe Griffo.

Our rent for Aldersgate is $500. Audrey Drake made a motion to accept the Treasurer’s Report. It was seconded by Marian Lowe.

Audrey reported a huge donation of mostly hard cover books. Carolyn Gaylord continues to give us best sellers. Audrey purchased two DVD’s. She will buy DVD’s as they go on sale. We thank Audrey for her work organizing and displaying books in the library.

Mary Lee O’Brien says that the stats are “holding steady.” There is no significant increase in numbers since the July and August “record breakers.”

Betty Sawyer sent the library’s article to the BCA Newsletter.

The 2009 Library Luncheon speaker may be Kathleen Bishop. She is an author from Utica, NY. Her writings capture the history of the United States through women’s diaries. She also discusses using diaries in researching genealogies. The tentative date for the luncheon will be July 30, 2009 at the Coachlight.

Will Jeff Wilson have a book signing at the library booth at the 2009 Country Faire?

We will invite the people from the Lyons Falls Library Board to the BGCL for a visit and refreshments after the New Year. The invitation will be sent for January 12, 2009 at 1:30PM.

Tom Gunn replaced the toner on our printer and was reimbursed for the cost. Tom will continue to take care of the library’s technology needs.

Thank you to Erma and Ambrose Andre for cleaning the flower beds, and to Cathy Rohr, our resident gardener.

We will put some music CD’s in the library for people traveling away from Brantingham for the winter months.

Betty Sawyer will contact Emily, our intern, to see if she wants to work during winter school breaks.

Our next meeting will be on January 15, 2009 at 10AM at Betty Sawyer’s.

A motion to adjourn the meeting was made by Cathy Rohr and seconded by Mary Lee O’Brien.

Respectfully submitted.
Judy Wilson
